What is a Self-Select PIN?

The Self-Select PIN method allows taxpayers to electronically sign Form 1040 and Form 4868 using a five-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) of their choice (excluding all zeros).

To successfully e-file, taxpayers must provide either:

  • Their Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) from the prior year’s tax return, or

  • Their Self-Select PIN from the previous year.

This method ensures secure authentication and verification when filing electronically.
