ExpressExtension Support
Find answers to your questions. What if I don't pay my taxes before the deadline?
Filing a tax extension only extends the time to file your return, not to pay your taxes. You must pay any taxes due by the regular filing deadline.
If you don’t pay your taxes by the deadline, the IRS may charge interest and penalties:
- Late Payment Penalty: 0.5% of the unpaid tax per month.
- Late Filing Penalty: 5% of the unpaid tax per month or part of a month your return is late, up to a maximum of 25%.
If your return is over 60 days late, there's an additional minimum penalty for late filing. This penalty is the lesser of $510 (for tax returns required to be filed in 2025) or 100% of the tax owed.
