When is the deadline to e-file a tax extension?

The deadline to e-file a tax extension form is generally the same as the deadline to file your tax return. However, specific deadlines vary depending on the type of tax return. For example:

• If the business needs to file an extension using Form 7004 for Form 1065 or 1120-S for the 2024 tax year, the deadline is March 17, 2025.

Note: An extension to file your tax return does not extend the deadline to pay any taxes owed. If you owe taxes, you must estimate and pay the amount due by the original tax deadline to avoid penalties and interest.
