I can't file by the extended deadline. Can I attach a reason for late filing to avoid the penalty?

You don’t need to attach an explanation or reason when you file your return. Explanations included at the time of filing will not be considered. After you file your return and receive a notice about penalties, you can send an explanation, and the IRS will determine if you meet the reasonable cause criteria.
