What is an IP PIN?

An IP PIN, or Identity Protection Personal Identification Number, is a six-digit number known only to you and the IRS. It helps prevent someone from filing a tax return using your Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number without your consent.

The IP PIN also aids the IRS in verifying your identity when you file your tax return, whether electronically or on paper. Even if you don't have a filing requirement, having an IP PIN provides added protection for your account.
