Filing a tax extension form extends the amount of time to file a tax return and not the amount of time to pay any taxes due. If you owe tax to the IRS, you must make the tax payment on the regular due date of the return/extension filing due date.
In case you don’t pay by the due date, you may have to pay interest and penalties. The standard penalty is 0.5% of the unpaid tax amount for each month. On the other hand, if you don’t file your tax return by the deadline (provided you haven’t filed for an extension), the penalty is 5% of the unpaid tax for each month that return is late.
