For the 2020 calendar tax year, the IRS has extended your income tax return due date from April 15, 2021, to May 17, 2021

However, if you need additional time to file beyond the May 17 deadline, you can request an extension until October 15 by filing Form 4868 on or before May 17, 2021.

The due date to file form 4868 also varies based on the following:

  • If you are a fiscal year taxpayer (a year ending on the last day of any month except December), the due date will be three months and 15 days after the close of your fiscal year. For example, if your tax period ended in September 2020, your due date to file form 4868 would be December 15, 2020.
  • If you are a U.S. citizen or resident or a calendar year income tax filer who is out of the country on the regular due date of your return (May 17, 2021), you’re automatically qualified for an extension until June 15 to file and pay any tax due without requesting an extension.

However, if you need time beyond June 15, 2021, file form 4868 by June 15, 2021, to get additional four months (October 15, 2021) to file your return. For additional information, refer to Publication 54, Tax Guide for U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad.
