For the 2023 calendar tax year, the due date to file your individual income tax extension form 4868 is the same as the due date of the individual income tax return, i.e., April 15, 2024.
However, if you need additional time to file beyond April 15, you can request an extension until October 15 by filing Form 4868 on or before April 15, 2024.
The due date to file form 4868 also varies based on the following:
- If you are a fiscal year taxpayer (a year ending on the last day of any month except December), the due date will be four months and 15 days after the close of your fiscal year. For example, if your tax period ended in April 2024, your due date to file form 4868 would be August 15, 2024.
- If you are a U.S. citizen or resident or a calendar year income tax filer who is out of the country on the regular due date of your return (April 15, 2024), you’re automatically qualified for an extension until June 17, 2024, to file and pay any tax due without requesting an extension.
However, if you need time beyond June 17, 2024, you need to file form 4868 by June 17, 2024, to get an additional four months (October 15, 2024) to file your return. For additional information, refer to Publication 54, Tax Guide for U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad.
