Unfortunately, I cannot file the return by the extended due date. Can I attach the reason for the late filing with the return to avoid a penalty from the IRS?

No, do not attach an explanation when you file your return. Explanations attached to the return at the time of filing will not be considered. Once you receive a notice about penalties after you file your return, send an explanation, and the IRS will determine if you meet reasonable cause criteria.
