PTIN is short for Preparer Tax Identification Number. It is an eight-digit number preceded by the letter “P” issued by the IRS to paid tax return preparers who prepare tax returns on behalf of taxpayers. So, if you’re a tax return preparer or tax professional, you must have a PTIN in order to prepare and file tax forms on behalf of taxpayers.
Things to be remembered:
- You should be above 18 years of age to get PTIN.
- One PTIN cannot be used by multiple individuals.
