1. How can I find my estimated tax amount for business/personal tax returns?

For corporations, estimated taxes can be calculated using the Worksheet: Form 1120-W. For sole proprietors and individuals, the estimated taxes can be calculated using the Worksheet: Form 1040-ES
Typically, you can also calculate the estimated taxes based on the following aspects.

  • Previous Year's Tax Liability: If the income and expenses of you or your business remain the same all the years, use the previous year's tax liability as a basis for estimating the current year's tax liability.
  • Current Year's Income and Expenses: You can use the current year's income and expenses to determine your expected taxable income.
  • Tax Law Changes: While calculating estimated taxes, it's important to consider any recent changes in tax laws that might affect the tax liability. This includes changes in tax rates, deductions, credits, and more.
  • Tax Credits and Deductions: Make sure to include any tax credits and deductions that you are eligible for when estimating your business/personal tax liability. For example: Depreciation, and credits for research and development, renewable energy, etc.

2. Would IRS accept my extension?

If you e-file an extension by the deadline with all the correct information, your Form will be approved by the IRS. However, the e-filing extension will not extend the deadline for paying any taxes due to the IRS.

3. Will I receive any proof of reference when the IRS accepts my extension?

Upon acceptance of your extension by the IRS, you will receive an email with the acceptance letter. This letter will have the Submission ID and the electronic postmark on when your extension was transmitted.

4. What if I cannot pay the complete balance due while filing an extension?

If you cannot pay the complete balance due amount you owe to the IRS, you can still get the extension. But make sure to pay as much as you can to limit the amount of interest you will owe. Also, you may be charged the late payment penalty on the unpaid tax from the regular due date of your return.

5. Am I able to cancel an online payment made to the IRS?

Yes, you can!

You can call IRS e-file Payment Services 24/7 at 1-888-353-4537 to cancel your payment. However, you must wait for 7 to 10 days after your return is accepted before calling. To learn more about canceling EFW payments, click here.

6. What if I am an “Out-of-the-Country” tax filer filing Form 4868?

Óut of Country filers are U.S. citizens and resident aliens living outside of the United States and Puerto Rico. They are allowed an automatic 2-month extension of time to file their tax return and pay any federal income tax that is due. The application for an extension can be filed only after the tax period ends and on or before the due date of June 15.

In order to qualify for the foreign earned income exclusion and/or the foreign housing exclusion or deduction, they need the time to meet either the bona fide residence test or the physical presence test. In this case, Form 2350 may be filed to request an extension of time to file the tax return.

7. Who qualifies as an “Out-of-the-Country” tax filer?

A U.S. citizen or resident alien and on the regular due date of the return:

  • Are living outside of the United States and Puerto Rico and their main place of business or post of duty is outside the United States and Puerto Rico, or
  • Are in military or naval service on duty outside the United States and Puerto Rico.

8. How do I see my previous year's submissions?

You can only view the previous year's submissions if you have already filed an extension with us.

To see the previous year's submissions, follow the step below:

  • Sign in to your account 
  • On the dashboard, click Form History and choose the appropriate extension form (4868, 7004, 8868, or 8809) from the drop-down menu.

You can now view and download the selected extension form from the Action column for current and previous years.


 

 

9. The IRS has rejected my Extension, and the deadline is passed. How much time do I have to correct and re-transmit?

Your timeline also called the perfection period which, is the 5 calendar days given by the IRS  to perfect (or correct) and retransmit a rejected extension. Furthermore, the duration will never be extended despite weekends, holidays, or the end-of-the-year cutoff.

Also note: Typically, the perfection period begins when an extension is transmitted timely.

10. Will the tax I owe to the IRS be charged to my credit card?

No, your credit card will be charged only for the services you avail of. Once we receive the filing fee, your charges will appear as "ExpressExtension.com" on your credit card statement.

To pay your taxes owed to the IRS, you have several options, including Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW), Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), Check/Money Order, or Credit/Debit Card. If you choose EFW, you will need to provide your bank information during the filing flow for the IRS to withdraw your tax amount. For the other payment methods, it is your responsibility to ensure that the tax is paid before the deadline to avoid penalties.

11. I leave mid-way while filling the form. Will my information be saved?

12. How much time I have left to file my extension?

We record the exact date and time (as per the taxpayer's timezone) you transmit the extension as Electronic Postmark. The IRS accepts the extension request if the electronic postmark is on or before the deadline and treats it as a timely filed extension.  
 
 

13. Can ExpressExtension guarantee the acceptance of my extension?

Based on the time Zone you provide to us, we record the exact date and time you transmit the extension, also known as Electronic Postmark. The IRS compares the Electronic Postmark with the filing deadline and determines if the extension was filed on time or not. 

If the electronic postmark is on or before the filing deadline and the provided information on the extension is accurate, the IRS will approve your extension and consider it as timely filed. However, if the electronic postmark is dated after the extended filing deadline, there is a possibility of the IRS rejecting it for late filing.

16. I have transmitted my extension form. What's Next?

The IRS will review your extension, and you will be notified whether it is accepted or rejected through email.

Meanwhile, if you have opted for EFTPS, credit/debit card, or check/money order as your tax payment method, ensure that you pay prior to the filing deadline to avoid incurring penalties from the IRS.

17. Can I pay the taxes I owe to the IRS while filing my personal tax extension in ExpressExtension?

Yes, if you owe taxes to the IRS, you have the option of making your payment through any of the following methods while filing for a personal tax extension in ExpressExtension: Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW), Check/Money Order, or Debit/Credit Card.

1. Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW): To pay tax dues through EFW, you have to provide your checking or savings account information for the IRS to withdraw money from your account. The application defaults the Payment Request Date i.e., the withdrawal date to the actual date when the IRS receives your extension. For instance, if you file your extension on March 13, then the payment request date is on the same date.  

2. Check/Money Order: Once you transmit your extension, make sure that your check is payable to the "United States Treasury." The mailing address depends on the place where you live. You can find out the mailing address for your location on this page.

18. I chose the check option on the personal tax extension for paying my tax dues. What do I do next?

You need to download and print a copy of your filed personal tax extension form. After you print, follow the steps below:

  • Enclose the copy of your printed form 4868 with the check/money order.
  • Write your Social Security Number (SSN), daytime phone number, and ‘(tax year) Form 4868’ on your check or money order.
  • Do NOT staple or attach your payment to Form 4868, the IRS will not accept it.
  • Mail your check or money order with a copy of your Form 4868 to the "United States Treasury" based on your location.

 

19. I do not have an SSN to file form 4868. What should I do?

If you are a U.S. resident and do not have an SSN, you need to create one to file form 4868. If you are a non-U.S. citizen who doesn’t have and isn’t eligible to get an SSN, you can use an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) to file your extension. If you don’t have an ITIN, you must file your 4868 on paper and enter “ITIN TO BE REQUESTED”."For more specific instructions, click here.

20. What is Express Guarantee?

22. What extension form does a single-member LLC file?

For Federal tax purposes, the Single-member LLCs are taxed as a sole proprietorship and must file Form 4868which will extend both your personal and business tax filing deadline. This is because your type of LLC (limited liability company) is considered a "pass-through entity" for income tax purposes, meaning that your business tax return is included as part of your Form 1040 personal return (on Schedule C).

24. How do I check the IRS payment status of my extension filed through ExpressExtension?

If you owe tax due, you will see the following payment options in ExpressExtension to make your payment to the IRS. 

  • Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW)
  • Credit/Debit Card
  • Check/Money Order
  • EFTPS

If you’ve chosen to pay your tax due using the EFW payment method,  your tax will be automatically debited from your account on the requested date by the IRS. You can check your bank statement to verify whether the amount has been deducted from your account. If it's been at least two weeks from the requested date and your payment withdrawal does not occur on the expected date, we recommend calling the IRS's toll-free number at 800-829-1040. 

In the case of other payment types, you are responsible for making your IRS payment in time to avoid penalties.

Once the payment is made, you will receive a confirmation number and a digital time stamp on your payment receipt.

We are sorry to inform you that ExpressExtension currently provides e-filing services for federal tax extensions and does not support state tax extension e-filing. However, if your state permits the paper filing, you may still fill out your state extension form, print it, and mail it to the respective state agency.

30. I just signed up and came across PTIN. What is that?

PTIN is short for Preparer Tax Identification Number. It is an eight-digit number preceded by the letter “P” issued by the IRS to paid tax return preparers who prepare tax returns on behalf of taxpayers. So, if you’re a tax return preparer or tax professional, you must have a PTIN in order to prepare and file tax forms on behalf of taxpayers.

Things to be remembered:

  • You should be above 18 years of age to get PTIN.
  • One PTIN cannot be used by multiple individuals.
