If I get an extension does it apply to my state tax payment?

No. An extension of time to file your state income tax return does not mean an extension of time to pay any taxes you may owe. If you end up owing tax at the end of the year, you must pay by the original tax deadline or you will be subject to late-payment penalties. To avoid paying penalties, it’s a good idea to calculate an estimate of what you might owe and submit payment. Even if you overpay, you can always claim a refund in a few months when you eventually file your state tax return.
