Individuals who cannot file the following federal tax return by the deadline can file an extension Form 4868 to get an automatic six-month extension of time to file.
- Form 1040
- Form 1040A
- Form 1040EZ
- Form 1040NR
- Form 1040NR-EZ
- Form 1040-PR
- Form 1040-SS
Domestic taxpayers within the U.S. must submit Form 4868 by the extended due date of July 15. Also, this happens to be the due date (unchanged) for taxpayers outside of the U.S. and Puerto Rico to submit Form 4868 for a 4-month extension. An extension will give you a six-month extension of time to file but doesn’t give you extra time to pay your taxes.
