Who can file Form 4868?

Individuals who are unable to file the following federal tax returns by the deadline can file Form 4868 to get an automatic six-month extension to file:

• Form 1040
• Form 1040A
• Form 1040EZ
• Form 1040NR
• Form 1040NR-EZ
• Form 1040-PR
• Form 1040-SS

Domestic taxpayers in the U.S. must submit Form 4868 by the extended due date of July 15. This is also the due date for taxpayers outside of the U.S. and Puerto Rico to submit Form 4868 for a 4-month extension. 

Please note that this extension gives you an additional six months to file but does not extend the deadline for paying any taxes owed.
