What is an IP PIN?

An Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) is a six-digit code you can obtain from the IRS. It serves as an added layer of security, safeguarding your tax account by preventing unauthorized individuals from filing a tax return using your Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).

Even if you are not required to file a return, an IP PIN helps verify your identity when submitting tax documents electronically or on paper.
