IRS Error Code [F4868-001-02]:
Form 4868 can only be filed after the 'TaxPeriodEndDate' in the IRS Submission Manifest and on or before the due date to which the extension applies unless Line 8 checkbox or Line 9 checkbox is checked.
Rejection Message: The application for an extension can only be filed after the tax period ends and on or before the due date of April 15.
What does it mean? You have filed your extension before the tax period end date or after April 15. The tax period for an individual tax return is a calendar year that ends on December 31. From here, you have time until April 15 to file your return or request an extension. When the extension is filed on or before December 31 or after April 15, the IRS rejects it.
Resolution: In this case, your only option is to re-transmit your extension after December 31. You cannot request an extension after April 15.
Here's how you re-transmit your return after December 31:
- Log in to your account.
- On the dashboard, under Personal Extensions - Form 4868, identify the rejected return. Then, click the Rejected by the IRS button found against it.
- You can find the list of errors associated with the return. Since no changes need to be made to the return, proceed to re-transmit the return.
- Review the details, and click the Transmit button to re-transmit your return to the IRS at no additional cost.
