IRS Error Code [F4868-001-02]:

Form 4868 can only be filed after the 'TaxPeriodEndDate' in the IRS Submission Manifest and on or before the due date to which the extension applies unless Line 8 checkbox or Line 9 checkbox is checked.'

Rejection Message: The application for an extension can only be filed after the tax period ends and on or before the due date of May 17.

What does it mean: You have filed your extension before the tax period end date or after May 17. The tax period for an individual tax return is a calendar year that ends on December 31. From here, you have time until May 17 to file your return or request an extension. When the extension is filed on or before December 31, or after May 17, the IRS rejects it.

Resolution: In this case, the only option for you need to re-transmit your extension after December 31. You cannot request an extension after May 17.

Here's how you re-transmit your return after December 31:

  1. Log in to your account.
  2. On the dashboard, under Personal Extensions - Form 4868, identify the rejected return. Then, click the Rejected by the IRS button found against it.
  3. You can find the list of errors associated with the return. Since no changes need to be made to the return, proceed to re-transmit the return.
  4. Review the details, and click the Transmit button to re-transmit your return to the IRS at no additional cost.

We'll keep you informed on the status of the return once we hear back from the IRS.
